Protecting the Cold Chain with IoT Temperature Monitoring
Cold chain temperature monitoring uses IoT sensors to track temperature continuously across transport and storage, sending a real-time alert the moment readings drift outside the safe range — so action can be taken before perishable stock is lost. It turns temperature control from a paperwork exercise into a live safeguard.
Why temperature excursions cost so much
In food, pharmaceuticals, and other perishables, a few hours outside the safe range can spoil an entire load. Manual checks and end-of-trip data loggers tell you a problem happened — but only after the stock is already compromised. By then you’ve lost the product, and possibly the customer.
Continuous monitoring with real-time alerts
The RAMAC Temperature Sensor (DS1) monitors temperature continuously and sends alerts through the RAMAC App the moment a reading moves outside your defined limits. That early warning lets a driver, depot, or operations team intervene — reroute, re-cool, or escalate — while the product can still be saved.
It runs for around five years on a battery and communicates over the low-power Sigfox network with BLE 5.0, so it works without on-site Wi-Fi or a SIM card, in both vehicles and fixed storage. It is ICASA approved and Sigfox certified for use in South Africa.
From transport to storage to proof
Because the sensor reports continuously, you also build a record of temperature over time — useful for compliance, dispute resolution, and proving the integrity of a delivery. Pairing temperature monitoring with RAMAC asset trackers lets you tie where a shipment was to what condition it was in, across the whole journey.
What to look for in a cold chain solution
- Continuous monitoring with real-time excursion alerts, not just a download at the end
- Multi-year battery life and no dependence on on-site connectivity
- Coverage in transit and in storage
- A temperature record for compliance and disputes
- Local certification and support
